EBSOLA Dual Language owl pellet dissection

EBSOLA Dual Language fourth and fifth grade virtual and in-person students participated in an owl pellet dissection today sponsored by a Kohl’s Care grant for Discovery World. Led via a Google Meet presentation, the students carefully dissected their own owl pellet to investigate and identify bones, as they learn about birds of prey and the food chain.

Owls eat smaller animals, like rodents and small birds, and can swallow their prey whole but cannot digest bones or hair, so they must cough them up (as pellets) before they can eat again. By looking through the pellets, students were able to find clues as to what animal the owl ate.
