High School Social Emotional Learning
Overview
What is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to:
- Understand and manage emotions
- Set and achieve positive goals
- Feel and show empathy for others
- Establish and maintain supportive relationships
- Make responsible and caring decisions
These core competencies help students thrive both in and out of the classroom. SEL is foundational to creating safe and engaging school environments where all students can succeed.
At the high school level, students face increasing academic demands, social pressures, and decisions that shape their futures. SEL equips them with tools to:
- Navigate stress and manage challenges
- Communicate effectively and resolve conflicts
- Build positive peer and adult relationships
- Develop a strong sense of identity and purpose
- Stay engaged in school and motivated to graduate
To ensure SEL is meaningful and embedded in daily school life, our district has adopted the CORE Project at all high schools. The CORE Project is a comprehensive initiative that aligns with the CASEL SEL framework and emphasizes:
- Connection: Building strong relationships between students and adults through mentorship and advisory structures.
- Ownership: Empowering students to take charge of their learning and behavior by setting personal goals and reflecting on their progress.
- Reflection: Providing regular opportunities for students to process their experiences and develop emotional intelligence.
Empowerment: Encouraging student voice and leadership in shaping a positive school climate.
