KENOSHA, Wis. (Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023) – On Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, the Mary Lou & Arthur F. Mahone Fund, in partnership with Kenosha Unified School District and Racine Unified School District, will again present the PowerUp College and Resource Fair at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 900 Wood Road.
The resource fair exposes high school juniors, seniors and their families to area colleges and universities and teaches them about financial resources that can help make college a reality. Students will have the unique opportunity to meet, network and discuss future goals with college and university representatives from throughout the region. The fair is open to minority and low- to moderate-income juniors and seniors who attend KUSD, RUSD, St. Catherines High School, St. Joseph Catholic Academy or Christian Life School.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to the many volunteers and community partners who come together to make the PowerUp event a reality for students and families in Kenosha and Racine,” said KUSD Superintendent Dr. Jeff Weiss. “This event speaks volumes of the Mahone Fund and the support they provide to help students continue on their path to success following graduation, and for that we are forever grateful.”
“The PowerUp College and Resource Fair is really an amazing opportunity for our students to access everything they need to be prepared for college in one place,” said Interim Superintendent Soren Gajewksi. “We’re grateful to the Mahone Fund for helping to break down barriers for our students and families.”
“The Mahone Fund remains committed to supporting the college and career path of our young people,” said Sabrina Morgan, Mahone Fund Program Coordinator. “Providing this face-to-face interaction with decision makers from regional colleges and universities creates meaningful access and important relationships for students and parents, as well as a pipeline of talented local students for our academic partners to recruit and invest in their future.”
Workshop topics include: Financial Literacy: Financial Preparation for College and Beyond, Get on the Path: College and Career Readiness and HBCU College Tour Presentation, and College Admissions 101. In addition, former Mahone Fund scholarship recipients will share their personal success stories and speak to the benefits of the Fund’s Career Exploration Organization mentoring program.
“It is important to talk with families about the ups and downs of planning and paying for college expenses and experiences,” said Educators Credit Union Director of Community Engagement Victor Frasher. “PowerUp is a great resource for our community because it helps families connect with local experts and receive advice on college affordability. It makes us proud to be a long-term partner of PowerUp”
