Forest Park 4th Graders Explore Sedimentary Rocks and Fossils

Forest Park Elementary 4th graders took their science learning to the next level with a hands-on lab on sedimentary rocks and fossils! 🪨

Students created their own sedimentary rock layers using sand, gravel and plaster—just like layers form in nature. To make it even more exciting, they buried pieces of candy beneath their layers to represent fossils waiting to be discovered!

Students explored how sediment sinks and builds up in water, compacts under pressure, and cements over time to form sedimentary rock. They also saw firsthand how rock layers become thicker as more sediment accumulates.

Learning + creativity + fun = science in action! 🔬👏
