Speech and Language Therapy
Overview
Our staff of approximately 39 speech-language pathologists “SLPs” provide therapy services to approximately 1400 speech-language impaired students in the Kenosha Unified School District.
Students must meet state eligibility criteria and need special education in order to qualify for speech-language services at an IEP meeting. Per PI.11.36 (5)(a), a speech-language impairment is an impairment of speech or sound production, voice, fluency, or language which significantly affects educational performance, or social-emotional, or vocational development. For some students, speech-language services are considered a related service that are needed in order for a student to benefit from the special education services in their primary disability area.
Goals
Communication is the foundation of academic and social development and supports lifelong learning. The speech-language therapists provide specially designed instruction to students identified with a speech-language impairment to help them become competent communicators within the school environment. In the Kenosha Unified School District, services are provided between the ages of 3 and 21 in the public schools as well as in some of the community child care centers and in some of the private and parochial schools within the district’s boundaries. There are different service delivery models which are determined by the student’s IEP team.
