Adaptive dance classes are dance classes for students with disabilities or neurodiversity to move, dance, and learn in an inclusive and welcoming space. Students in Ms. Griffin's Dance 2 class had the opportunity to learn about this particular style of movement and how it has a positive impact on their peers in the special education department at Kenosha Bradford High School. After learning about this lesson, students had the opportunity to create/structure their adaptive dance class, and then lead the class. The dance students learned to think on the fly in case things did not go as planned and what it is like to co-teach and work as a team. They also created discussions based on how they think their classes went along with creating relationships with peers whom they may not have met or seen around school regularly. Dance students utilized different props to assist with their classes and learning movement. They found that these tools assisted with sensory needs and kept their attention on the task and activity. Students in both classes learned that communication is not always verbal, but can be through movement, and as a group, we can all find a certain connection.
