Washington students explore African culture through mask-making

Washington Middle School 6th graders in Ms. Johnson’s social studies class wrapped up an incredible unit on Africa!

Throughout the quarter, students explored the rich cultural traditions of African masks by researching different styles, learning about the meaning of Adinkra symbols, and discovering how colors can carry deep cultural significance. They also watched traditional dances to understand the role masks play in ceremonies and community life.

To bring their learning full circle, students designed and created their own African-style masks, each one reflecting personal meaning and creativity. This hands-on project helped students connect history, culture, and their own identities.

A great example of learning that goes beyond the textbook and into real understanding and expression! 🙌
