Weapons Detection Systems at KUSD High Schools
Student and staff safety remains a top priority in Kenosha Unified. To further strengthen the district’s comprehensive safety measures, we are installing CEIA OPENGATE weapons detection systems at all high schools.
These systems will enhance security while maintaining a welcoming and efficient entry experience for students, staff and guests each day.
What to Expect
Students will walk through the weapons detection system upon entering the building each morning. The process is:
- Safe and efficient
- Easy to follow
- Supported by trained school staff
Students will be able to carry their backpacks and personal belongings as they enter the building.
If the system alerts, staff will guide the student through a brief secondary screening in accordance with district procedures.
How the System Works
The CEIA OPENGATE system is a walk-through screening device that helps detect prohibited items. It is similar to what many students and families experience at sporting events, concerts, and other large venues.
Important to know:
- The system does not record personal information
- The system does not capture images
- It is designed strictly for safety screening
Items that cannot go through the system:
- Laptops and tablets
- Three-ring binders
- Collapsible umbrellas
- Metal lunchboxes
- Metal pencil cases or glasses cases
Students will hand these items to staff as they walk through the system.
Items that can go through the system:
- Non-metal lunchboxes
- Water bottles
- Books, notebooks, and folders
- Cell phones and keys
Tips for Students
- Follow staff directions at all times
- Use the shortest available line
- Remove required items before reaching the system
- Walk straight through the center in a single file line
- Wear backpacks properly (on front or back, not off to the side)
- Remove hats and lower hoods
- Keep moving and avoid touching the equipment
Partnering with Families
Families play an important role in ensuring a successful implementation. We encourage parents and guardians to:
- Talk with their students about what to expect
- Help them prepare their backpacks
- Consider replacing metal items with cloth or plastic alternatives to help avoid delays
- Reinforce the importance of following directions
Questions?
Families with questions are encouraged to contact the school office.
Working Together
By working together and coming prepared each day, we can ensure that this added safety measure is effective, efficient, and supportive of a positive school environment for all.
