Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse Intervention
Overview
In our commitment to fostering a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment, KUSD recognizes the importance of addressing alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) violations not only through consequences, but also through education and support. When students make choices that violate our district’s AODA policies, it is often a signal that they may be facing challenges that require deeper attention and intervention.
Rather than rely solely on punitive responses, we believe in using restorative and educational strategies that help students understand the impact of their actions, reflect on their decision-making, and develop healthier coping skills.
What is BASE Education?
BASE Education is a research-based, social-emotional learning (SEL) platform designed to address a wide range of mental health, behavioral, and substance use issues. It offers digital modules for students that are:
- Evidence-informed and aligned with CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) competencies
- Written by mental health professionals
- Designed to promote student reflection, self-regulation, and personal growth
- Interactive and confidential, helping students engage at their own pace
BASE Education and AODA Intervention
When students violate AODA policies, the district uses BASE Education as an intervention tool rather than relying solely on suspension or exclusion from school activities. Students assigned to BASE Education modules related to substance use will:
- Engage in guided, reflective learning about the consequences of alcohol and drug use
- Explore the social, emotional, and legal implications of substance-related behaviors
- Identify personal triggers and risk factors
- Learn practical tools for resisting peer pressure and making healthier choices
A Restorative Approach
Using BASE Education allows KUSD to provide a restorative, student-centered response to AODA violations. It promotes personal responsibility, supports social-emotional development, and helps reduce repeat offenses by addressing the root causes of risky behavior.
