Administrative Regulation 6310 – Required KUSD Minimum Instructional Time for Core Subjects

Outlined below are the minimum weekly requirements in language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Interpretation of the time requirements is not meant to encourage teaching approaches that isolate content into a single subject matter area. Providing instruction that integrates curriculum across the subject areas is strongly encouraged.

All elementary schools (grades K-5) will offer 30 minutes of recess daily, Monday through Thursday (*shortened day on Friday) in accordance with what is allowable by the Department of Public Instruction.

K-8 choice schools will offer this period of recess to K-5 students. It is encouraged that they allow grades 6-8 to this same recess opportunity, but it is not required.

Due to the difference in the number of students/sections per school, as well as differences in the actual buildings, there will need to be flexibility in the number of recesses used to meet the goal of 30 minutes. Additionally, attempts will be made to avoid repeatedly denying a student recess time as a consequence.

This policy will take effect for the 2026-27 school year.
