Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) and the national non-profit KaBOOM! awarded Grewenow Elementary School a Let’s Play Community Construction Grant that will be used to build a new play space to enhance their school’s playground and the quality of recess for students.
The playground build is made possible by Let’s Play, an initiative by KDP to provide the funding, equipment and play spaces to help kids and families make active play a daily priority. Through Let’s Play, KDP and its partners are committed to helping create safe and inspiring PLAYces for Grewenow kids to learn, explore, grow and just be kids.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for our school,” said Mr. Joseph Sellenheim, Grewenow Principal. “Our current playground equipment has been undersized for the amount of students who are on the playground at any given time, and for years, none of our structures have even had slides.”
The $15,000 grant will go toward the purchase of a new play space on the northwest side of the school’s playground. As an urban neighborhood school serving a diverse population of students, Grewenow was awarded the grant to ensure the children in its neighborhood have access to safe, high-quality play experiences not only during the school day, but throughout the year.
Sellenheim said, “This is so big for our kids and neighborhood. Grewenow wants nothing more than for its students to live active, healthy lives that lead to both academic and social-emotional successes. Play is such an important part of child development.”
KDP has committed $38.5 million to Let’s Play through 2019, impacting youth-serving organizations across the U.S., as well as Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Through Let’s Play, KDP partners with two non-profit organizations, KaBOOM! and Good Sports, to build and improve playgrounds in underserved communities and provide grants for sports equipment. In this way, KDP is doing its part to help eliminate the play deficit by making active play possible for more kids.
