Important Change to Free & Reduced-Price Breakfast and Lunch

2026-2027 MEAL PROGRAM UPDATES Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, KUSD will transition from a districtwide Community Eligibility Program (CEP) back to a partial CEP. As a reminder, the CEP allows eligible schools to serve healthy breakfast and lunch meals to students at no charge each day. During the 2022-23 school year, KUSD expanded CEP districtwide. Due to current financial strains on Fund 50, KUSD will return to a partial CEP beginning in 2026-27. The Annual Free and Reduced Meal Application is now live! Families are encouraged to apply to potentially receive meals at the free/reduced rate. In addition, completing the form helps families and schools qualify for additional benefits, including: Title I funding support, which helps schools provide additional academic services, instructional support, & resources for students Athletics fee waivers Fine arts fee waivers Advanced Placement (AP) testing fee waivers Direct Certification (DC) promotes participation in school meal programs by simplifying access to free and reduced price meals. Children are automatically (categorically) eligible for free or reduced price school meals based on their eligibility as a foster child or based on their households participation in these programs: FoodShare (SNAP), W-2 cash benefits (TANF), Medicaid, or the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR). When a student is directly certified for free meals, the student's family does not need to complete the application for free or reduced-price meals. When a student is directly certified for reduced meals, the student's family may still consider completing the application based on household size and income to determine if greater benefits are available. Cabe recordar que el CEP permite a las escuelas elegibles ofrecer diariamente desayunos y almuerzos saludables a los estudiantes sin costo alguno. Durante el año escolar 2022-23, KUSD amplió el CEP a todo el distrito. Debido a las actuales dificultades financieras del Fondo 50, KUSD volverá a un CEP parcial a partir del ciclo 2026-27. ¡Ya está disponible la Solicitud Anual de Comidas Gratuitas o a Precio Reducido! Se anima a las familias a presentar la solicitud para tener la posibilidad de recibir comidas de forma gratuita o a precio reducido. Además, completar el formulario ayuda a las familias y a las escuelas a optar a beneficios adicionales, tales como: Apoyo financiero del Título I, que ayuda a las escuelas a ofrecer servicios académicos adicionales, apoyo pedagógico y recursos para los estudiantes. Exención de cuotas para actividades deportivas. Exención de cuotas para actividades de bellas artes. Exención de cuotas para los exámenes de Colocación Avanzada (AP). La Certificación Directa (DC) fomenta la participación en los programas de comidas escolares al simplificar el acceso a comidas gratuitas o a precio reducido. Los niños son elegibles de forma automática (categórica) para recibir comidas escolares gratuitas o a precio reducido si están en régimen de acogida temporal (foster care) o si sus hogares participan en los siguientes programas: FoodShare (SNAP), beneficios en efectivo W-2 (TANF), Medicaid o el Programa de Distribución de Alimentos en Reservas Indígenas (FDPIR). Cuando un estudiante recibe la certificación directa para comidas gratuitas, su familia no necesita completar la solicitud de comidas gratuitas o a precio reducido. Cuando un estudiante recibe la certificación directa para comidas a precio reducido, su familia puede considerar completar la solicitud —basándose en el tamaño y los ingresos del hogar— para determinar si existen beneficios mayores disponibles.
