Placement Tests
The ACT and SAT are placement tests often used to admit students to four year colleges and to determine placement in academic classes at the college level. Check with specific college to determine preferred test and score. All KUSD Juniors will take the ACT in the spring at no cost. Registration and the test will be done during school hours.
What will the test look like?
The ACT is made up of four multiple choice test in English, math, reading and science. Each test score is based on 36 points; a composite score is the average of the 4 tests. A 36 is the highest score for each category. The SAT consists of a verbal, critical reading and math test along with other optional subject tests. The best score is 1600.

(ACT has identified the minimum score needed on each ACT test to indicate a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding first-year college course.)
What if I want to retake the test?
The ACT & SAT can be taken more than once and a college will accept the highest score.
Reasons for Retaking the Test
- Feel like you could do better
- Need a higher score for college admission
- Need a higher sub-score so that you don’t have to take a remedial subject in college; contact admission office for information
- Need a higher score for scholarship opportunity at college
How much will it cost if I take it again?
Costs vary. Refer to the website. Fee waiver forms are available IF a student receives free or reduced lunch at the high school. See your counselor for the waiver form.
What are the other test dates?
The ACT is offered in September, October, December, April and June each year. The SAT is offered the months of October, November, December, January, March, May and June. Check the website for specific dates and registration deadlines.
