There is a Future in S.T.E.M.

What is S.T.E.M.? S.T.E.M. stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Even though the United States has an unemployment rate of approximately 9.4%, there are approximately one million one hundred and eighty-three thousand S.T.E.M. jobs going unfilled. The vast majority of those jobs are in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These jobs are located in various parts of the country and one may have to move to a location where the jobs exist. I bring this to your attention because this is the focus of LakeView Technology Academy. LakeView helps prepare students to go into various fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These 1.183 million jobs require a student to have a two year associate degree, or a four year bachelor’s degree, and some require a doctorate degree. Regardless the job, these are jobs with a future. Here is where you as a parent/guardian come into the picture. S.T.E.M. occupations require people with competent technical knowledge and good problem solving skills. S.T.E.M. jobs require people who constantly learn and grow with the needs of the position. Young people need to be encouraged to not just learn for a grade but to learn for understanding. This means that learning mathematics or science to get a good grade on a test is important, but even more important is learning for understanding. S/T/E.M. occupations require workers who have a solid grasp of the field of knowledge associated with the occupation. Just getting by is not enough. Our young people need to be encouraged to learn for meaning and understanding. Getting a grade of (A) and really not having a sold grasp of the topic is not good enough. A student with a grade of (B) and a good grasp of the subject will go further because he/she will be able to apply their knowledge and move on to higher levels of learning and understanding. Young people are many times in a rush and learn for a test but do not learn for understanding. You as a parent should take some time and talk to your daughter/son and ask them what they really know about a subject.  Please stress the need to learn for understanding. There is nothing wrong with taking a course over so one can develop a solid understanding of a subject.
