National Junior Honor Society

Scholarship   ~   Service   ~  Leadership  ~  Character  ~  Citizenship

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) recognizes middle school students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. NJHS members are committed to making a positive impact in their school and community through service projects, leadership opportunities, and acts of kindness. Through NJHS, students have space to develop their leadership skills while learning the importance of giving back and making a difference.

Service hours can be submitted to the NJHS advisors or the main office.

Applications for admission are based on GPA and will be mailed to potential 6th & 7th grade candidates in spring after third quarter’s grades have been posted.

Important Dates:

  • Friday, May 7, 2026 — Applications and service hours for new members are due
  • Monday, May 17, 2026 — 2026-2027 Induction Ceremony
  • Friday, May 28, 2026 — Service hours for current members are due

In order to qualify for Mahone’s NJHS, students are expected to:

  • Complete 12 or more documented hours of community service by spring of 2026.
    • Service hours may begin to be accumulated and documented from the first day of school.
    • Hours include service to school, church, family or community — anything where you are not compensated for your service.
  • Demonstrate strong character and leadership through behavior and interaction with others.
    • Behavioral referrals resulting in ISS or OSS could be grounds for rejection or immediate dismissal from NJHS.

In order to maintain membership in Mahone’s NJHS, students must:

  • Maintain a 3.5 GPA (or higher) each quarter.
    • One quarter below a 3.5 GPA results in probation.
    • A second quarter below a 3.5 GPA in a given school year results in dismissal from NJHS.
  • Complete 12 or more hours of community service during the school year.
    • Service must be documented on service hour sheets and turned in to NJHS advisors.
    • Failure to complete the hours and turn in documentation results in dismissal from NJHS.
  • Demonstrate strong character and leadership through a strong behavior record.
    • Any out-of-school suspension results in dismissal from NJHS.
    • Any three referrals in a given school year result in dismissal from NJHS.
