Lance Middle School Cell Phone Policy

We realize that the decision of whether a student is ready to take on cell phone responsibilities is a family matter, we also must have a policy in place. As educators, we see the negative impact of cell phones (social media bullying, inappropriate content looked at and/or shared, videotaping, wasted class time) on a daily basis, and our attempt is purely an effort to create a safe and productive environment for all students.

We have seen too many students (some with zero discipline referrals their entire school career) fall victim to the pitfalls of cell phone misuse. We understand the importance that cell phones play in the daily activities of many of our families, and in society, therefore, we feel a broad, “no cell phones brought to school” policy is not a feasible option. Our cell phone policy will be as follows:

Starting this year, cell phones will need to be placed in the student’s backpack at the start of the day and remain there until dismissal. If there is an extenuating circumstance, a parent/guardian may ask to discuss that circumstance with an administrator.

Consequences for violating Lance’s cell phone policy

  1. First offense – the student will be asked to put the phone in backpack
  2. Second offense – adult holds phone until dismissal time
  3. Third offense – parent required to pick-up phone
  4. Fourth offense – Out of School Suspension (OSS)

If a student refuses to follow the steps detailed in 1-3 (not putting the phone away when asked by staff, not handing the phone over to staff when asked) it may result in an OSS.

No Earbuds/ Headphones In School

Due to increased safety issues and repeatedly asking students to remove headphones/ earbuds, over-the-ear headphones or AirPods are not allowed anywhere in the building (during the school day).  The only exception to this is if they are school-issued headphones for state testing or Spanish class.  If a student needs headphones for a class per the directions of a teacher they must be the wired earbud style.

Consequences for violating Lance’s earbud policy

  1. First offense – the student will be asked to put the earbuds in backpack
  2. Second offense – adult holds the earbuds until dismissal time
  3. Third offense – parent required to pick up earbuds
  4. Fourth offense – Out of School Suspension (OSS)

If a student refuses to follow the steps detailed in 1-3 (not putting the earbuds away when asked by staff, not handing the earbuds over to staff when asked) it may result in an OSS.

Student User Accounts at School

Your student under the age of 13 may be asked to create user accounts on digital applications for educational purposes as they relate to classroom instruction. The account creation will be under the direction or supervision of the classroom teacher. Student information required to create such an account is typically limited to school email address, user name, or birthdate for age verification. No other personal information will be shared with these digital applications. Use of these educational accounts is in accordance with the Kenosha Unified School District Acceptable Use Policy, School Board Policy 6633, the federal Children’s Internet Protection Act, and applicable state and local privacy laws.

If you do not want your child to create user accounts for digital applications, you should opt-out by notifying your child’s teacher in writing. Please contact the classroom teacher if you have questions or would like to view a list of the digital applications used for student learning that require some form of student information.
