Learning Garden

Thanks to generous monetary contributions made by the families of Mike Lindstrom, Antonio & Luisa Montemurro, and Sergio & Heydi Domiguez, we were able to construct our Nash Elementary School Learning Garden. Our Nash Learning Garden is a 60 X 60 foot raised bed of fertile soil surrounded by landscaping blocks. It is divided into four triangularly-shaped quadrants and has an X-shaped four-foot crushed granite path running through the middle of it. The center of the garden is accented by a large, ornate, rough cedar pergola. Above, we’ve displayed pictures of the garden along with close-up photographs of the granite memorial stones housed in three of the quadrants.

Our Learning Garden will allow Nash students to plant varieties of perennial and annual flowers along with a wide array of vegetables.  Learning will come to life as biology concepts learned in the classroom will be transferred to their outdoor hands-on gardening experience.  Our Learning Garden will also serve as an avenue through which we may promote the idea of living in a ‘green’ society.  A portion of food waste accumulated from our daily school lunches will be utilized as fertile compost.  We are excited that this school experience will lead to more and more backyard gardens developing at the homes of students attending Charles W. Nash Elementary School!

On the afternoon of Friday, November 5, 2010, as part of our Annual Nash School Fall Harvest Festival, we conducted our Nash Learning Garden Dedication Ceremony and planted the first set of perennials and bulbs into two of the quadrants.  We thank Bergmann Nurseries for their generous contribution of plants and bulbs.
