Student Membership

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is more than just an honor roll. Lance Middle School Junior Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student’s outstanding performance in the areas of: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character, and Citizenship. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.

Scholarship*

Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 for two consecutive quarters are eligible. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students should maintain a 3.25 GPA after Induction, or their membership will be placed on probation or removed from NJHS.

Service*

This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Students must perform 3 hours prior to induction and an additional 12 hours of community service each year.

Leadership*

Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character*

The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.

Students should be free of multiple disciplinary actions or their membership will be placed on probation or removed from NJHS.

Citizenship*

The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs.

Induction to NJHS

*Students must have two teacher recommendations and complete three service hours to be considered for induction.

*Meet the GPA requirement of 3.5 for two consecutive quarters, and maintain a 3.25 GPA.

Obligations of Membership (7th and 8th grade students already inducted)

With induction into the Lance Middle School Junior Honor Society, a member assumes certain obligations. First and foremost, all Lance Middle School Junior Honor Society members are expected to maintain a 3.25 grade point average and be free of disciplinary action (multiple detentions, ISS, OSS). In addition, each member must complete 10 hours of community service each year (outside of school).

If a student falls below their obligations, they will be removed from NJHS. It is the student’s responsibility to organize, track, and turn in their community service hours each year. NJHS students are expected to have positive behavior, and they will be removed from NJHS for behavior issues.

Students are also required to attend any planned NJHS general membership meetings. The dates of the meetings will be posted on the Lance calendar and on the student’s service hour cards (blue card).

*Officer meetings will be held according to any NJHS events that will be planned.
