ELL
Washington’s English Language Learning (ELL) program is specifically designed to facilitate language learning and development to non-native speakers of English. Increased academic rigor combined with difficult academic language demands may create many challenges for language learners. English language instruction, conducted by a certified ELL teacher, is facilitated through a push-in model in a mainstream classroom or in an ELL classroom located in the school. The focus of ELL service is to assist students in achieving academic and social language proficiency. Explicit language instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing will allow ELL students to be successful and fully participate in all aspects of school life.
Our job is to support students who speak and/or understand multiple languages. We believe bilingualism is a huge asset to these students, but sometimes they need a little support to do their very best in school, and that’s where we come in. We both teach elective classes to help students improve their English with practice in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students can also get extra help from us during Resource time with their classwork in their content area classes (Science, Social Studies, Math, and English).
Ms. Wright has been teaching ELL students at Washington for the past 18 years. She received her teaching degree from UW Parkside and her masters in Curriculum and Instruction from U.W. Whitewater. Soccer is her favorite sport and she’s been the soccer coach at WMS for seven years. She enjoys spending time with her family and dogs. Reading and traveling are her favorite hobbies.
