KENOSHA, Wis. (Friday, Feb. 6, 2026) – LakeView K-8 Academy middle school students launched their annual Engineering Fair unit in January with a real-world, human-centered design challenge focused on medical prosthetics. They will showcase their solutions, designs and prototypes at the annual Engineering Fair on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
During the launch, sixth grade students received the scope of their project: to design a modification or solution to improve a medical prosthetic. The project emphasizes problem-solving, empathy and applied engineering skills, encouraging students to think critically about how design impacts quality of life.
To provide authentic context, students heard from guest speaker Mr. Crawford, who shared his personal experience using a prosthetic after losing his leg in a snowmobile accident. An avid water skier and wakeboarder, Mr. Crawford described the challenges he encounters and how existing prosthetic designs do not fully meet his needs. His presentation prompted students to ask questions, brainstorm solutions, and begin developing ideas to improve prosthetic function and accessibility.
Presentation windows are as follows:
- 9:01–10:01 a.m. (best window for project presentations)
- 11:16–12:16 p.m. (best window for project presentations)
- 1:07–2:07 p.m.
- 2:09–3:09 p.m.
LakeView K-8 Academy’s Engineering Fair reflects the district’s focus on preparing students to think creatively, solve complex problems, and apply learning beyond the classroom.
