Monarch butterfly release

Indian Trail social studies teacher Megan Meyer and science teacher Tracy Metzler began a tag and release program for their students through Monarch Watch. Mrs. Meyer brings in caterpillars, keeps them in the classroom until they emerge from the chrysalis, and when they are ready for release, the students in Mrs. Metzler’s Med Sci Academy Animal Survey class tag them, record the data, and then release. The datasheet is sent to the organization where the migration patterns are studied. The students have been very interested in the process, and the project is also being used as a cross-curricular activity with Mrs. Repta’s Social Science Seminar class to study geography.
