McKinley visits Hawthorn Hollow

Students raise their hands while sitting in the one-room schoolhouse classroom.

Mckinley Elementary third-graders from Melissa Orton's class visited the one-room schoolhouse at Hawthorn Hollow, Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum today and students were taken through a re-enactment of what a typical day would have been like in the 1906 Pike River School. A period-dressed teacher guided the students through a reading class using McGuffey’s Reader, an arithmetic class using lap slates, a penmanship lesson using dip pens and bottle ink, a 1906 social studies class and an old-fashioned spelling bee.
