Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month, and McKinley is supporting our community members with Autism by sharing some facts about Autism.  Autism is a lifelong developmental condition.  ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder which covers Autism and similar conditions such as Asperger Syndrome.  Everyone on the spectrum is different, and each person benefits from different levels of support.  Many people with Autism struggle with their senses and can often have sensory overload.  Individuals with Autism may find it hard to recognize and control their feelings/emotions.  Communication can also be another challenge for people with Autism.  Most people have routines in their daily lives, (i.e. what time they wake up in the morning).  Individuals with Autism may like their routines to stay the same as it provides them with structure and helps them know what is happening next.  Like many conditions, you can’t always tell by looking at someone that they have Autism.  Please join McKinley in celebrating our differences and supporting Autism Awareness Month.
