The\u00a0design of the new school would be nearly identical to the\u00a0northside Bose Elementary School that was constructed in\u00a01967, opening its doors to students in early 1968.<\/p>\n<p>In September of 1969, Thomas B. Jeffery Elementary School\u00a0opened its doors to Kenosha\u2019s southside residents. The\u00a0school was dedicated on November 13, 1969, during American\u00a0Education Week festivities.<\/p>\n<p>After its opening, enrollments at Jeffery quickly exceeded\u00a0the 550-pupil capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The first year Jeffery Elementary School opened, it was a\u00a0county school, in an open area with few houses near the\u00a0site. The school property was annexed to the city the\u00a0following year and has been steadily residentialized\u00a0throughout the years.<\/p>\n<p>The school was given its name in honor of Thomas B.\u00a0Jeffery, a one-time bicycle manufacturer who was fascinated\u00a0by the thought of a horseless gas buggy. In 1909, Jeffery\u00a0sold more cars than Ford or Cadillac, with production\u00a0running as high as 3,800 vehicles annually. Mr. Jeffery\u00a0was the first president of the Kenosha Manufacturers\u2019\u00a0Association. He demonstrated his commitment to public\u00a0education in Kenosha by spurring the Board of Education to\u00a0establish the first shop classes, and donating wood and\u00a0metallurgy tools for an industrial arts program at Durkee\u00a0School. Mr. Jeffery died in 1910.
