The Pulse is an award-winning publication of Indian Trail High School & Academy in Kenosha, Wis., produced by a one-year internship class of general studies and academy students. The paper provides a forum for students of Indian Trail, encouraging the exchange of ideas while striving to provide fair, accurate, and entertaining reporting. The views and opinions expressed on the editorial page are not those of Indian Trail administration, staff, or the Kenosha Unified School District. The commentaries are those of Pulse staff writers, guest columnists, and students themselves.
In 2014 and 2018, The Pulse took first place in the statewide high school newspaper competition, sponsored by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, earning a $1,000 grant each time to support its journalism program from legendary publisher William Branen’s foundation. Since 2009, individual journalists have taken home more than 80 state awards in the categories of column and feature writing, general reporting, investigative reporting, photography, sports reporting and advertising creation.
Since 2016, The Pulse has earned a first place rank overall in the KEMPA (Kettle Moraine Press Association) newspaper competition. Student reporters have also earned dozens of individual awards in the categories of sports writing, investigative reporting, cartooning, review and column writing, photography,page design, general reporting, and feature writing.
The Pulse is published in hard copy five times a school year and distributed throughout the school. Funds raised by students selling concessions at football games and hot cocoa before school days pay for printing costs. The publication also has an online presence.
