Screen Shot 2013-11-13 at 8.47.45 AMGotham prepares themselves for a new Batman as two-time Academy Award winner Ben Affleck dons the cape and the cowl in the 2015 release of the Man of Steel sequel, tentatively titled Batman vs. Superman.

It’s easy to see why people would be worried that the Gigli actor is becoming the newest Caped Crusader, and I would be worried too, if it was 2003. However, 10 years have passed and Ben Affleck, on multiple occasions, redeemed himself by directing and starring in critically acclaimed films, like Argo and The Town.

“I think he’s kinda old, I don’t like him,” said Izaak Simar, an Indian Trail High School senior.

However, he later said we should “give him a shot.” While many think that Ben Affleck won’t play a tough, rugged Batman, this incarnation of the Dark Knight will be focused on a ‘tired,’ ‘weary,’ and ‘experienced’ Bruce Wayne, says Warner Bros. CEO, Kevin Tsujihara, creating an interesting balance between Henry Cavill’s inexperienced,

young Superman.
Comic book fans have also come to the defense

of Affleck, most notably, Kevin Smith, a known die- hard Batman fan, and a man who has directed Ben Affleck in several cult-classic hits, like Chasing Amy.

“I’m all for this idea… He can act in anything.

I think he’s an amazing actor. I said he could even play the shark in a ‘Jaws’ remake,” said Smith.

Almost all reactions from fellow Hollywood actors have been positive. However, many fans initially hated the idea but it seems that the idea is growing on them.

“I think he’s fine… I just don’t like that it’s someone I recognize,” said Paul Eggers, a Batman fan and an ITHS senior. “Everyone is overreacting.”

While mixed opinion fills the general consensus, we will have to wait two years to see if he delivers. However, we should give him a chance, because he’s the actor that Batman deserves but not the one it needs.
