With a current varsity score of 19-2, the Indian Trail girls tennis is smashing their way through the season.

“[I am] pretty certain we will win our two matches next week as well,” head coach Angela Konick said.

Through practices, long bus rides and yoga, the tennis team has spent countless hours together.

Varsity player and general studies junior Lainy Ristau has 12 years of tennis under her belt and has lots to share about her season,

“This season has been different from others because we are really all super close as a team,” Ristau, a state qualifier for tennis, said. “We just click very well together and push each other to get better every day.”

Whether through preparing for a match or decorating a float for the Homecoming game, the team has a very strong bond. Despite matches being moved, the girls have been flexible and have pulled through with a very successful season so far.

“My favorite thing about tennis is the competition,” Ristau said. “When you’re playing another player at your level, it’s super exciting to play points.”

Communication Academy junior Isabella González has four years of experience and has noticed that despite the pandemic, the girls tennis team has grown not only in skill but in members as well.

“We have so many more girls on the team than the past years.” González said.

“Everyone has been working so well together as a team, and at practices we engage with each other.”

In order to accommodate matches, many players had to switch their game up. Players like González had to switch from singles to doubles, but despite this change González has improved her game.

“One of my favorite things about tennis is the adrenaline I get either starting a match or finishing a match.” González said. “Another thing I really like is my doubles partner this year. Although I don’t usually like playing doubles, I really enjoyed this season with her and the support I got from her.”
