Sonia Sotomayor was born on June 25,1954, in the Bronx, NY to Juan Sotomayor and Celina Baez, who are both native Puerto Ricans. Having lost her father at the age of 9, Sotomayor worked hard to push forward for her future and her family and eventually graduated  valedictorian in high school with a dream to become an attorney.

After graduating from Princeton University and Yale Law School, Sotomayor became an assistant district attorney and later on moved into private practice. On May 26, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Sotomayor as an associate justice of the Supreme Court, and she was confirmed by the Senate on Aug. 6, 2009.

Sotomayor made history as the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the High Court, and Hispanics around the country celebrated her success as one of their own, as she was honored with such recognition. Holding her position for 12 years and counting, Sotomayor has shown what hard work and dedication can get you and serves as an inspiration for first generation Americans.
