As you’ve probably heard at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con, DC and Warner Brothers have announced that they are going to make a Superman/Batman movie. Yes, the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight are going to star together in their own movie. And while that’s all well and good, many DC fans are asking the same question: “What about Wonder Woman?”

Well, they have an answer for that too: She’s too complicated for her own movie.

You can imagine the outrage many fans, including myself, felt at that comment. There were many, “How dare you say that”s and, “She is not”s. But after I stopped to think about it, I realized that Wonder Woman is a complicated character. I mean, think about it: She grew up on an island full of man-hating

women, then met and saved a man who accidentally found the island, then followed him to the misogynistic outside world, then decided to save it despite how messed up it is, then decided to save it on a regular basis. That’s not a very simple concept.

But that’s not the question. The question is: Is she too complicated for her own movie? And the answer is no, she’s not too complicated for her own movie.

Not only is this true from a comic movie adaptation perspective. Superman and Batman are complex characters, but it’s also true from a movie standpoint. Inception and Shutter Island are both critically acclaimed and undeniably complex movies, and the fact that they were complicated didn’t stop them from being made. In fact, compared to those movies, Wonder Woman is actually quite simple.

DC also can’t claim that it’s because people wouldn’t watch a movie with a female super hero, as Marvel has made an Electra movie in the past, and there are rumors that Miss Marvel, a popular female superhero in Marvel comics, will be in the Avengers 2.

So, why isn’t Wonder Woman getting her own movie? Personally, I feel that the answer is that DC is too caught up with making money through proven methods to care about what the fans want. Because even if the Superman/Batman movie is terrible, they will at least break even from those who will pay money to see another rehash of the same characters

It’s a shame, because I’m going to wait to see the Superman/Batman movie when it’s released on DVD, but I would gladly pay to see Wonder Woman in theatres.
