Election Season is upon us

Every year, in Marla Day’s AP U.S. Government class, there’s a mock election that takes place. Day holds these elections for the purpose of applying government concepts in her class, because these are very relevant topics that are brought up, she said. It also is something that broadens personal viewpoints, by giving the individual the opportunity to see and research another viewpoint, and to help them gain a better understanding.

This year, the mock election just so happened to fall around the actual midterm election. At the end of the “election” season, the two candidates chosen are put head to head in a formal, and respectful debate. Afterwards, the entire class votes for their prefered candidate.

Candidates for period four’s class were Emily June, who ran as the Democrat, and Ian Metzger, who ran as the Republican. They both argued their sides very professionally. But in the end, there can be only one winner; Republican candidate Ian Metzger ended up triumphant. Candidates for period six’s class were Joey Hillstrom, the Democrat, and AJ Allessio, Republican. It was a very heated and long debate for period six, but by popular vote, Democrat Joey Hillstrom claimed victory.

Rumors of a debate between Metzger and Hillstrom have been brewing around Day’s classes, but right now it’s business as usual in AP government as this “election” season comes to an end.
