Riverdale, the popular show based on the Archie Comics, swept the nation when it aired early last year. The show was so well liked by its viewers that it was renewed for a second season shortly after the first one concluded.
The first episode of Season 2 premiered Oct. 11. The season continues to follow the teenage lives of Riverdale High School students Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), and Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch).
SPOILER ALERT AHEAD: Unlike the first season, the second focuses less on “The Black Hood,” the town’s mystery murderer, and more on the main crew’s relationships, friendships, and lives. Season 2 also introduces a new character, Chic (Hart Denton), Betty’s creepy, long lost brother. The introduction of Chic also introduces new drama that unfolds throughout each episode. Another major event in the season is the discovery that Cheryl Blossom, the beautiful, feisty, drama-obsessed, head cheerleader is bisexual.
The second season is enjoyable, but many of the topics in the show are a bit of an overkill and get boresome after they are strung out with no resolution for four or five episodes. The characters also seem to all somehow stop caring or discussing the tragedies brought to the town by “The Black Hood” from the first season, which seems unrealistic and in a way discredits the whole first season of the show.
Overall I’d have to say I enjoyed the first season of the series more than the second. Although slightly disappointed, I refuse to give up on the show because it is one of my favorite series to binge-watch. Even though the season has just ended, CW announced it will renew the show for a third season which will premiere next fall. I will be sure to watch. Season 2 of Riverdale deserves 3.5 out of 5 stars. I hope next fall Riverdale will continue to bring the suspense, drama, and characters we all know and love.
