The congregation and playing of bands from all over the school district was celebrated at the 57th annual Band-O-Rama at Indian Trail earlier this month, allowing student musicians and conductors to show off the pride and joy that is our fine arts and music program.

Preparations for this festival had been in the works since early December, which was severely stunted by all of the school days taken off due to the extremely cold weather. Despite the setback, confidence in the students was maintained by their conductors and peers alike.

“The kids have really risen to the occasion,” says Kenneth Wiele, instructor of Indian Trail’s band.

Apprehension could be felt in the air of Indian Trail’s gym as parents and friends filed through the doors and onto the bleachers, up until the moment instruments were raised to lips and sticks hovered above drums. Soon the music chased away any unease in the room as students of all ages became more sure of themselves and their fellow musicians. Shoulders swayed and feet tapped as the music transitioned from sweeping classical pieces to fast- paced dance music and folk songs.

Band-O-Rama guest conductor Dr. Glenn Hayes received a warm reception, with this being his third time as a guest conductor. His involvement and encouragement in forming connections through the arts could be seen by his conducting, as he made eye contact with students and fellow conductors. Many consider the Kenosha School District to be very lucky to have such an extensive and rich arts program, and Hayes is not an exception to this.

“While the academics are important and helps grow our minds,” says Hayes, “Music and the arts helps grow our souls.”
