Two years. That’s all it took. Two years for the third season of BBC’s Sherlock to return to television.

A new twist on an old tale, Sherlock follows Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories of a clever detective, but now in modern day England. The series first aired on the British Broadcasting Channel (BBC) on July 25, 2010, and season two aired two years after that in 2012.Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 8.54.51 AM

Each season contains only three episodes, but each one is about 90 minutes long. With only nine episodes and 13 1/2 hours of screen time, you might think this series is much ado about nothing. You’re wrong.

Sherlock is filled to the brim with action, crime solving, mystery, and just a touch of romance and humor. But none of this would be possible without great actors to portray the daring duo.

These classic characters are brought to life in our generation, by British actors of course, by Benedict Cumberbatch as the famous main character, Sherlock Holmes, and Martin Freeman as his companion, Dr. John Watson.

Season three follows the aftermath of the epic finale in season two, “The Reichenbach Fall.” Sherlock has been beckoned by his brother, Mycroft, to return to London to investigate an underground terrorist organization. Upon his return, Sherlock reveals to his friends that he is, in fact, not dead. It’s hard to say which of them took this news the best since they all reacted very dramatically in their own way.

The new season follows its episodes with a technique that the other seasons didn’t; it echoes the past as we watch how it effects the present. This captures the viewers attention to want to know more about the case and more about Sherlock and John.

In three episodes we watch the reunion of Sherlock and John, we meet Sherlock’s parents, John becomes engaged, married, and a father-to-be, someone almost dies, someone dies for real, and a ghost from the past shows his face again.

If you haven’t seen it yet, this is definitely one you need to add to your Netflix queue. It may be short, but it has more plot twists than Pretty Little Liars and will have you spitting out your tea on more than one occasion.
