SPOILER ALERT!

Zombies aren’t the only creatures who are too far gone in the AMC awarding winning series The Walking Dead. Newcomers to the show (especially those who hate horror) may wonder what the appeal of a series based around soulless, brain-eating monsters. When it comes down to it, zombies aren’t really interesting beings in and of themselves.

It’s actually the story of the living that pulls us in. The Walking Dead isn’t just a show about surviving the zombie apocalypse, it’s about the road the character takes to live through it. Each character is not only fighting for survival, they are fighting to keep the last bits of humanity they have left.

Our main character Rick has moved away from the leadership role after nearly losing his mind last season and has settled into a life as a farmer in the group’s prison sanctuary. Of course this can’t possibly last. Any piece of happiness in this world can be dead and gone in a moment. Just when the group thought that it had it good, evil attacks them from the inside in a form of deadly disease.

Plagues have been happening since the dawn of time, but the sick coming back and eating the living after they succumb to the disease presents a rather big problem. This season also has the long awaited return of everyone’s favorite manipulative psychopath, the Governor. We got to see a more vulnerable side of the Governor this season. For a time it seems like even a man as evil as the Governor could come back from the edge of darkness. That is until he finds another collection of survivors to control. I’m absolutely amazed at the Governor’s ablitily to turn a normal group of people into murderers.

Needless to say the Prison and Governor standoff ended in a bloodbath. The first half of The Walking Dead’s fourth season had all the horror, suspense, and drama you could want. I wholeheartedly give this season five stars. Anyone with a love of story should give this series a look.
