-New Learning Center offers help to struggling students

A new addition to Indian Trail this year, among many others, will be the school’s first Learning Center, a place for students to go when they need help with writing or math.

“Any extra time with writing or math could really push you to the next level,” says Julie Abt, founder of IT’s Learning Center and English teacher. “It could really benefit grades on papers.”

The Learning Center will be offered during school only. Students can drop in during the day to see if there is a writing or math tutor available, or teachers can send students down for one-on-one time.

“Teachers don’t always have the time to help students one on one,” Abt said. “This way students get extra help and extra time to work.”

Students are also urged to come in early and sign up for a specific day to be sure to get a spot with a tutor. The program will be available all day, so students can come during study halls, lunch, or releases. When students come they are expected to bring the assignment with them and a brief description of the assignment.

The tutors in IT’s Learning Center are students taking Advanced Placement classes. Students not taking AP classes but are still interested in joining can be recommended by their teachers. All tutors will need teacher recommendations.

The Learning Center is set to open Monday, Nov. 15. It will be available B Days, periods 2, 3 and 4 in Room 2400. Anyone interested in joining should see Abt in Room 1118.
