As the clock ticked forward and the buzzer beeped, the Franklin Sabers propelled forward and grabbed the win against the Indian Trail Hawks swim and dive team at the humid YMCA Callahan Branch on Nov. 30 .

In the humid YMCA Callahan Branch swim facil, the Indian Trail Hawks and Franklin Sabers high school boys varsity swim & dive teams competed on Nov. 30.

Indian Trail won in three events: in the 200 Medley relay, Luke Volbrecht, Will Gilbert, CJ Gilbert, and John Zettle; in the 100 freestyle, Eli Krystowiak; and in the 500 freestyle, Will Gilbert.

Head coach Billy Gilbert said he thought his team did great and showed great sportsmanship for their first meet.

“As a team we hope to beat Bradford and Tremper in our duel. Both will be close,” he said.  “Last year we beat Bradford by two points, and after scoring the meet with Tremper, based on this year’s times against last year’s results, we lost by 2 points, so both will be very close.”

Sophomore and distance swimmer John Zettle also mentioned that this year’s improvement compared to last year was very welcomed. There is a long season ahead, and it will take time to work out any kinks that arise before claiming success in future meets, Zettle said.

Zettle also set personal records in all events he participated in.

“I am focusing on improving my 50 free time so that I can help my relay more in meets, and to improve my 500 free time for personal growth,” he added.

Gilbert said there were no COVID-19 impacts on his team currently.

“We will be focusing on racing, endurance, and faster tempos during practices, as well as general team education so we know the intensity, focus, and stamina needed to win a close meet,” he said.

“We have the capability to beat both Bradford and Tremper high school this year, and being the best in Kenosha would be a huge momentum builder at the end of the season,” Zettle said.
