Standards, Benchmarks, and Most Essential Benchmarks

students

A standard is a summary description of what students should know and be able to do within a specific content area.  The benchmarks accompanying each standard are clear, specific descriptions of knowledge or skill that students acquire by/in a particular grade level or course. The Kenosha Unified School District Standards are aligned with state standards and the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination (WKCE) Assessment Frameworks.

A limited number of most essential benchmarks are those shown in bold italics on the standards documents.  These skills are considered absolutely essential for:

  • Success in the next grade/course
  • Success in other content areas
  • Success demonstrating proficiency (WKCE and more)
  • Success in life

The district’s common assessments are focused on the most essential benchmarks.

You will also find the most essential benchmarks publicized in the Success Steps brochures for kindergarten through grade 8 available at your school as well as on this Web site. English and Spanish versions are available.
