Instructional Coaching

Instructional Coaches help raise the level of student achievement by partnering with teachers in student-centered coaching cycles. Through this job-embedded professional learning, teacher capacity is built through a collaborative analysis of student-learning data and application of highly effective instructional practices in order to better meet student needs.

Diane Sweeney has been a national consultant since 1999. After teaching and coaching in the Denver Public Schools, Diane served as a program officer at the Public Education & Business Coalition (PEBC) in Denver. Since then she has become a respected voice in the field of coaching and professional development.

Jim Knight is a research associate at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning and the president of the Instructional Coaching Group. Joellen Killion is the deputy executive director of the National Staff Development Council. She focuses on improving teaching quality and student learning. Cindy Harrison is an international educational consultant. She is co-founder and partners with Joellen Killion in the consulting firm, Instructional Improvement Group. Harrison and Killion defined the ten roles of instructional coaches.
