Individuals using hazardous chemicals shall ensure compliance with the following conditions at all times:
- Laboratories shall be kept in a neat, orderly, and clean condition at all times.
- Work areas shall be cleaned upon completion of operation or activity.
- Access to exits, emergency equipment, and utility controls shall be unimpeded.
- All chemical containers shall be labeled with the name of the chemical at a minimum unless the container is under the direct control of the user. This control does not extend beyond the class period.
- Chemical experimentation and demonstrations shall only be performed in specifically designated laboratories and not in classroom settings.
- Reagent grade chemicals shall be stored and segregated according to the Flinn® Storage Pattern for laboratory chemicals. Chemicals shall no be stored inside of hoods or on bench tops.
- Flammable and Combustible liquids shall be stored and used in compliance with the District’s “Flammable and Combustible Liquids” code.
- Instructors shall, on an annual basis, examine chemical storage areas for outdated chemical stock and deteriorated, leaking, or broken containers. Instructors shall take the necessary measures (i.e. initiate work order, contact Facilities Services, etc.) to ensure unsafe and deficient inspection items are addressed in a timely manner. Such inspections shall be on District supplied forms and shall be submitted to the Math-Science Learning Coordinator by June 1st of each year. The Math-Sciences Coordinator shall ensure that the necessary measures have been taken or are being properly addressed.
- Instructors shall perform an inspection of the classroom in which hazardous chemicals are used at the end of each semester. Instructors shall take the necessary measures (i.e. initiate work order, contact Facilities Services, etc.) to ensure unsafe and deficient inspection items are addressed in a timely manner. Inspections shall be on District supplied form and submitted to the Math-Science Learning Coordinator within 10 days of the end of each semester. The Math-Sciences Coordinator shall ensure that the necessary measures have been taken or are being properly addressed.
- Instructors shall ensure chemical storerooms or storage areas are not used as chemical preparation or repackaging areas unless the room has appropriate areas for such activities. Chemical storerooms and storage areas shall be restricted to staff use only.
- All work utilizing hazardous chemicals shall be of appropriate scale that corresponds to the physical facilities available.
- Liquid chemicals shall be transported from the storage area in an outside container or bucket.
- Broken glass shall be placed in “sharps’ containers” for disposal.
- Apparatus which may discharge toxic chemicals (e.g. vacuum pumps, distillation columns, etc.) shall be vented into local exhaust devices such as hoods.
- Handle and store chemical glassware with care to avoid breakage. Use extra care when handling Dewar flasks and other evacuated glassware. Shield or wrap glassware to contain chemicals and glass fragments should implosion/explosion occur or be reasonably anticipated.
- Use equipment only for its designated purpose.
- Wash areas of exposed skin before leaving the laboratory and after handling all chemicals.
- Confine long hair and loose clothing.
- Plan appropriate protective procedures and positioning of equipment before beginning any new operation.
- Employees who work alone should make arrangements with co-workers to other personnel to periodically check-in on them.
- Laboratory or other operations involving hazardous chemicals that are carried out continuously or overnight shall be designed to prevent the release of hazardous substances in the even of an accident or interruptions in utility of service (e.g. electricity, cooling water, gases, etc.). Classroom lights shall be left on and appropriate signs posted identifying the nature of the experiment, the hazardous substance in use, and the phone number of the instructor responsible for the operation.
- Facilities Services shall be responsible for checking the operation of each eyewash station and safety shower on a quarterly basis. The results of these inspections shall be recorded on District supplied forms. The repair of non-functioning or improperly functioning eyewash stations or safety showers shall be initiated immediately upon discovery.
- All chemical substances that have the potential to become unstable with age shall be disposed at the end of each school year, regardless of the quantity of each substance in inventory. Instructors shall indicate these substances are to be disposed during their annual inspection by filling out the Annual Chemical Storeroom Inspection Form contained in the appendix.
