AIMS (Attendance Improvement Means Success)IntroductionAttending school regularly and establishing a positive attendance pattern, in the early years, is especially important for young children. A strong foundation in school attendance, builds life long habits of good attendance in our children’s future. Employers and our society expect timely and regular attendance. The AIMS (Attendance Improvement Means Success) Program, strives to work with children and their families to support a solid school connection and an increase in positive attendance patterns. AIMS professionals work with KUSD families and the community to help families overcome or reduce any obstacle standing in the way of regular school attendance. It is important to improve attendance patterns to increase academic success and build on vital lifelong skills. Program DescriptionThe Kenosha Unified School District Mission is to assure every child experiences high quality, personalized learning success while maximizing the brilliance of all our children. The AIMS Program is designed to increase attendance, decrease truancy, improve school attachment and strengthen home school communication. Research-based methods are utilized to engage families and reduce truancy. According to the National Center for School Engagement’s Truancy Prevention in Action, Best Practices and Model Truancy Programs July 2005, critical components to any successful attendance improvement program includes:
The AIMS Program serves students K-8 that are in danger of being identified as habitually truant or have already been identified and referred to the K-8 Attendance Officer. The program is provided as an alternative to court involvement or as a voluntary referral. Program elements include: Incentive-Based Educational Activities, Family/School/Community Connections Strengthening, Mentoring, Tutoring, Monthly Parent Support Meetings, Parenting Skills/Asset Building, Case Management, Youth Outreach activities, and Awards Ceremony for Families. AIMS Specialists have small caseloads of 10-15 families to best serve the needs of the families involved in the program.
