What's New in CLC

  • Grewenow is opening an Afterschool program with limited hours; see site for additional information.
  • New programming will be offered at select schools including Zumba, Archery, and Fencing.
  • Students who participate in Afterschool programs will have an opportunity to join in on the fun at the new Boy and Girls Club of Kenosha facility on a regular basis.
  • There are before school programs at three schools: Jefferson (starts a 7:20 am, Roosevelt which starts at 7:00 am, and Vernon which starts at 6:00 am)

Families across Kenosha struggle to find quality care for their student afterschool. Students alike find it challenging to get homework and academic assistance in areas of reading and math on a consistent basis. Through many efforts we are now able to provide afterschool programming on Wednesdays at Jefferson Elementary. To date that is now four elementary schools that offer Wednesday programming: Brass, Jefferson, Grant, and Vernon.

Our CLC Chess students were able to participate in a Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation tournament this past Saturday at Lakeview Technical High School. This was the first time our students participated in this event and so many of them WON! Now I know we are suppose to support kids and there are so many advantages to playing chess, but winning is fun!

There were several sections like K-2, K-5, and K-8 and many of our students won individual trophies in these games. There were also total team sections (by school). The following were winners:

Lincoln Middle School won the 1st Place Team Trophy for the K-8 Section
EBSOLA won the 2nd Place Team Trophy for the K-5 section
Individual Recognition: Chris from Grant captured 4th place
Individual Recognition: Various students took 6th thru 10th place (about 50 kids competed)
Individual Recognition: Jesus from Lincoln won 3rd Place and Abby from Lincoln took 9th and 10th place respectively

There will be another tournament Saturday, January 29th at St. Peter School (2224 30th Avenue). Permission slips will go out soon!

New for 2010 - Gateway Technical College and Kenosha Unified School District has found yet another way to partner. Students who have been awarded Federal Work Study at Gateway will now be offered an opportunity to work in the 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

The 21st Century Community Learning Center dollars expand our Afterschool Projects at both Vernon and Grant Elementary this year! Both schools were awarded a grant to implement an Afterschool Program in their buildings. Also, we finally secured funding for Jefferson Elementary school where an afterschool program has existed but with limited funding. We will be able to serve an estimated 400 more students in afterschool during the hours when children need supervision and access to academic and social programs.

CLC is starting on the first day of school! The 21st Century Community Learning Centers within elementary schools will open on the first day of school; September 1st, 2009. We’ve made this change to accommodate our students, families, and the community. There are numerous benefits to starting CLC on the first day of school including the fact that students must be made to feel like CLC is a part of the regular school day. Parents also find it challenging to arrange care for their children for the first few weeks of school.

The one-time registration fee for the elementary CLC programs and Kids Stop has changed for the 2009-2010 school year. The one-time registration fee is $5 per child as opposed to last year’s fee of $10 per family. This information is printed on the enrollment form in the 2009-2010 Parent Handbook, and posted on our website as well.

The CLC monthly bills will be mailed home to our parents beginning October 1, 2009. In recent years the bill was generated by the central CLC office located within the ESC building, sent to the schools to be placed in teachers’ mailboxes and sent home with the children. In order to expedite our billing cycle time, to provide our parents with the most up to date account information, and to decrease the instances of lost bills - we will begin mailing bills to the homes.

One Wednesday each month, students that have perfect attendance at school and at CLC the previous month will  be invited to a special day of programming including movie night, ice cream socials, and more. A list of these students will be generated and invited to attend. Permission slips will need to be completed as students qualify each month.

CLC has begun to use the KUSD Messenger service to send reminders to parents about important CLC dates. The messenger system is the same system that KUSD utilizes to inform parents about important topics including school closure dates, student absences, etc.

CLC also utilizes Zangle, the District’s Student System. Implementation of this program for CLC allows for ease and efficiency in the areas of attendance and accounting. It is also the system currently used by all the schools, so updates to student information will remain consistent throughout the District.

The sports program that is facilitated by the Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha and its affiliates are happy to announce another year of soccer. Soccer turned out to be one of the most successful sports programs in CLC.

Wilson Elementary has extended its hours to include a regular CLC program which includes power hour, snack, and enrichment five days a week. The program operates five days a week. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday students participate in power hour, snack, enrichment, sports, and more. On Wednesdays students attend the Madrigrano Center where they participate in a host of other learning activities as well.

All Extended Day Directors have a new KUSD voice mail that will allow parents and others to leave voice mail messages for the Directors. With this new feature Directors are able to respond to parents more timely which was a concern presented on the 2008-2009 parent survey.

Our afterschool program has developed a comprehensive volunteer program as a result of the partnership between Kenosha Unified School District-CLC and the University of Wisconsin-Extension. National Honor Society students from Bradford and Tremper will complete training and orientation that will enable them to be successful volunteers in the afterschool programs at many schools they may have attended. Other area high school volunteer groups are being created. What a way to give back!!!
