History

Kenosha County was first known as Pike Creek. The earlist settlers came from New England in 1835 and established themselves as farmers in the fertile country beyond the lake plain. In 1836, the name was changed to Southport, recognizing its growing importance as a harbor city, "exporting" wheat and "importing" lumber for homes and farm buildings. It was incorporated as a city, and designed as a seat of the newly created Kenosha County in 1850." Source: COMMUNITY PROFILE JUNE 1994
